As the main input device on your Dell laptop, a broken Dell Vostro 3450 Keyboard can really affect your productivity. Although there are keyboard kits available to reattach keys, they often cost as much as a replacement keyboard. Fixing one key will also take just about as much time as installing a new keyboard. Dell sells the replacement parts, but you can also find them in computer parts shops or on online sites like EBay. With the right tools, replacing the keyboard on your Dell computer takes less than ten minutes.
Turn off your Dell laptop. Remove the AC adapter plug and any USB or Ethernet cables you may have attached to it. Remove the battery from the laptop, too.
Open your Dell laptop's LCD cover as far back as it will go without damaging it. Insert the plastic prying tool into the small notch located on the far right of the hinge cover, just above the number key pad. Pry the hinge over off the laptop unit right to left and set it aside.
Unscrew the three screws that hold the Dell Vostro 3450 Keyboard in place. Put the screws aside for safekeeping. Slide the laptop keyboard toward the LCD screen cover and out of the bottom connector to maneuver the hole in it over the tab sticking out of laptop base. Lift the keyboard out of the laptop base once the hole and the tab line up.
Line up the new Dell Vostro 3450 Keyboard so that the hole is directly over the tab. Place the new keyboard into the laptop base. Slide it down toward the touchpad so that it connects with the base connector. Use the screws you removed from the old keyboard to attach the new keyboard to the laptop base.
Insert the clips at the left side of the hinge cover into the laptop base right above the ESC key. Snap the rest of the hinge cover back into place, left to right.
Tips & Warnings
Dell has manufactured hundreds of laptop models over the years. Keyboard replacement instructions may vary depending on the model. Consult the Dell Support Team or your laptop's service manual for information specific to your model.
If you have any type of warranty on your Dell laptop, replacing the keyboard yourself will probably void that warranty. Check your warranty terms before attempting to make any repairs to your laptop yourself.
